MADISON, Wis. — Craig Thompson knew exactly where to start this time as he faced the crowd, even without a script.
The outgoing WisDOT secretary retold the story of his introductory press conference in Madison in 2019, forced at the time to ad-lib his remarks due to a lack of a podium.
“I got done with it that day and [me, my wife and kids] went out to lunch and they’re like, ‘Yeah, by the way, you forgot to mention us,’” Thompson said. “So, I want to make sure I don’t do that this time! I love you guys very much.”
It was a heartfelt and funny moment that brought laughter from the dozens of people gathered Thursday night to wish Thompson well in his next journey. After 5 ½ years leading the state Department of Transportation, Thompson will become the vice chancellor for University Relations at UW-Madison Sept. 16.
The informal gathering of department members, industry colleagues, association heads, and longtime friends brought out high praise for Thompson, who guided WisDOT through ups and downs of the pandemic, civil unrest, the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and more.
Notably, Thompson reinvigorated the Transportation Projects Commission, which oversees the state’s Major and Southeast Mega highway and freeway projects.
“It’s been the privilege of my lifetime to be able to do this. Professionally, it’s been the greatest thing I’ve ever done,” Thompson said. “The biggest thing is the personal connections… I really think we did accomplish a lot together.”
WTBA’s relationship with WisDOT has also grown over the past five years. Thompson regularly met with WTBA Executive Director Steve Baas every month. He or his administrators also routinely attended WTBA Board of Directors meetings to provide updates and answer questions.
“WisDOT’s loss is UW-Madison’s gain,” Baas said. “We wish Craig all the best in his new assignment. On, Wisconsin!”
Deputy Secretary Kristina Boardman takes over for Thompson on Sept. 11.
