Applications are back open for the next round of grants to build out Wisconsin’s electric vehicle charging network, which in turn could bolster the state’s Transportation Fund.
WisDOT paused accepting WEVI Round 1.5 grant applications in February. President Donald Trump issued executive orders and USDOT Secretary Sean Duffy called for a review of EV funding measures that had been approved in the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.
That led to confusion and concerns from WisDOT and other states on whether previously pledged EV charger funding would still be available.
Wisconsin aims to use about $78 million in federal funds to award grants for private businesses that want to build Level 3 EV chargers. The state awarded 53 grants after Round 1 applications in May 2024.
The money must be used by private businesses, such as gas stations, hotels, and convenience stores to build Level 3 EV chargers along the state’s “Alternative Fuel Corridor.” Those areas include Wisconsin’s Interstate system and many U.S. and state highways.
Three cents per kilowatthour sold at these stations will go into the state Transportation Fund. The Department of Revenue estimates that would generate about $3 million in FY2025, but should increase as more people buy EVs.
Applications are due by Sept. 5. Click HERE to view some of the changes to the RFQ process since Round 1.5 resumed
