As we prepare to celebrate the nation’s 250th, we’re also recognizing another “birthday” of sorts this week.

President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed the Federal Aid Highway Act into law on June 29, 1956.

With the stroke of a pen, Ike and lawmakers helped launch a massive nationwide effort to build a robust interstate freeway system that continues to connect the country and drive our economy forward to this day.

It called for building 41,000 miles of interstate highway across the U.S. The bill also createdthe Highway Trust Fund so that the federal government could cover up to 90% of the costs, fueled by an increased federal gas tax and taxes on tires, buses and trucks.

Many WTBA members were instrumental in building out Wisconsin’s interstates and many more are actively repairing, rebuilding, and revitalizing that system in 2026.

Whether you’re traveling on I-39, 43, 90, or 94, picking up groceries, receiving a package from out of state, or planning a summer road trip, take a moment to remember the visionary actions taken 70 years ago that shaped our lives for the better.
